Breathing pattern disorder (BPD), also known as dysfunctional breathing, occurs when a person develops inefficient or irregular breathing patterns that interfere with normal breathing function. These patterns can affect breathing mechanics, which refers to how the muscles and structures of the chest and abdomen work together to move air in and out of the lungs.
Individuals with BPD may rely excessively on accessory breathing muscles, breathe too rapidly or shallowly, or have difficulty coordinating their breathing. As a result, they may experience shortness of breath, chest tightness, air hunger, or the sensation of not getting enough air, even when their lungs are otherwise healthy.
At Functional Airway Lab, we take a comprehensive, individualized approach to treating breathing pattern disorder. Rather than simply teaching breathing exercises, we work to identify and address the underlying factors contributing to inefficient or dysfunctional breathing.
Breathing involves more than just the lungs. It is influenced by breathing mechanics, respiratory chemistry, nervous system regulation, and the body's response to physical activity and stress. Our approach considers how these systems work together to support healthy, efficient breathing.
